SHELBY, N.C. -- A woman read the Bible for more than an hour to a man holding a knife to her throat, according to police in Shelby.
Lindsay Wood, 32, and her 15-year-old son had just returned home from church Wednesday night when an armed man attacked her from behind as she got out of the car.
Wood’s son, who was getting the trash can from the front yard at the time, said he heard a man’s voice and hid on the side of the house.
According to Shelby police, Wood opened her Bible and began reading scriptures to her attacker as he pressed the knife to her neck. She also told him about and invited him to her church.
Wood also told the man he could take her wallet and car, but he did not.
The police report said the suspect told Wood he was sorry, turned on an outside faucet and ran from the scene.
Police told NewsChannel 36 that it appeared the man also carved a six-point star into Wood’s vehicle.
Wood had to have roughly 25 staples placed in her neck to close the wound.
Neighbor Faye Cooke said that while Wood is in stable condition after surgery, the young mother is unable to speak at this time. Cooke added that the entire street was on high alert following the attack.
Police have increased patrols in the area.
Early information indicated the suspect and victim did not know each other, but the case is still under investigation.
