Rescue mission serves up thousands of Thanksgiving Day meals

Rescue mission serves up 2,000 meals on Thanksgiving in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Millions of Americans are sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner Thursday but the Charlotte Rescue Mission is stepping up for those less fortunate.

The organization plans on serving over 2,000 meals, all beginning bright and early on Thanksgiving morning with breakfast.

Volunteers gather every year to cook up warm and delicious meals for those in need.

"We're always overrun with staff, people just volunteer out of the woodwork," said one of the organization's volunteers. "It's a great day and great way to start our morning."

Meals throughout the day aren't the only comfort the Charlotte Rescue Mission provides. They also play movies all day for folks and families who want to sit back and relax. Cell phones are also available so anyone can call family members.

Charlotte Rescue Mission was founded in 1938 and has a Christian-based vision of helping people struggling with disease of addiction achieve long-term sobriety, find employment and stable housing, and restore and build healthy relationships.

The organization continues to need assistance of the Charlotte community. They're looking for donations of homemade desserts to accompany the thousands of meals they serve.

Those wanting to donate desserts can drop them off during Thanksgiving up to 10 a.m.
