September 16th, 2015 was the day I became a mother.
My daughter was born a day before my birthday, and it was the most precious gift I’ve ever received. From holding that sweet little 7 lb baby, to now chasing after my 20 month old, I’ve learned time sure does fly, and some days I just wish time could slow down.
When I became a mom, one of my good friends told me, “The days will be long, but the years will be short.” We all know some days can be overwhelming, but one of my favorite things about being a mom is seeing my child exude pure joy in everyday life. From her smiles to her sweet hugs, I love the happiness she brings to our entire family. Since my daughter's arrival, ordinary moments have turned into exciting adventures. Just the other day, we were walking through a store together and all of a sudden her eyes just lit-up and she gasped pointing to a picture of a flamingo with such excitement. Everything is a new discovery. It’s a beautiful thing to see the world through a child’s eyes.
Becoming a mother has also helped me become more patient, kinder, and much more cognizant of my choice of words and actions. My daughter brings out the best in me.
Our family now takes the time to celebrate holidays to the fullest and pass down family traditions that our daughter will remember. Now that I'm a mom, I feel closer than ever to my mother. Once I became a mom, I realized that everything my mother did for me was out of unconditional love.
My great-grandmother lived to be 105-years-old. She told me her greatest accomplishment in life was her family. I see the different generations in my family and the incredible relationships that they have built over the years. I feel so lucky to have such an amazing family, and I hope to continue the type of relationship my mother and grandmother have with my daughter.
When I look at how my life has changed since becoming a mother, I can’t help but think of this Robert Brault quote, “Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
