Compensation for Sonic Automotive's Smith more than $3.3M in 2006

Sonic Automotive Inc. Chairman and Chief Executive O. Bruton Smith received compensation the company valued at more than $3.34 million in 2006, according to a regulatory filing made Tuesday.

Smith, 80, received $1.1 million in salary, a $106,700 bonus, $941,600 in non-equity incentive plan compensation, and more than $1.13 million in stock and option awards. He also received $59,315 in other compensation, according to the Charlotte-based company's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Associated Press calculations of total pay include executives' salary, bonus, incentives, perks, above-market returns on deferred compensation and the estimated value of stock options and awards granted during the year. The calculations don't include changes in the present value of pension benefits.

Shares in Sonic Automotive, which has 171 automotive franchises and 37 collision repair centers, were down 11 cents, or 0.39 percent, at $27.99 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange. In the past year, the company's shares have traded in a range of $20.10 to $33.10.
