Punches thrown at Panthers training camp

07:05 AM EDT on Thursday, July 31, 2008

Associated Press

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- When the Panthers reported to Wofford College, quarterback Jake Delhomme said first-round pick Jeff Otah had "that nastiness to him."

Otah's mean streak was on display in the Panthers' first significant fight of training camp Wednesday morning.

When defensive end Tyler Brayton shoved him after a play, Otah responded with a roundhouse right punch. The two then exchanged punches and shoves as coaches blew their whistles. They were eventually separated by their teammates.

"You have that every camp," Fox said. "That's just a part of camp."

The 6-foot-6, 330-pound Otah has drawn praise early as he tries to fit in on a reworked offensive line.

"I think he's going to be really good. He wants to work," left tackle Jordan Gross said. "He's frustrated when he gets beat. He's a huge man, so you can't really coach that. He shows the desire so far to be good and he listens to everybody. There's no reason why he can't be a good player for a long time."
