LENOIR, N.C. -- A Lenoir man is charged with first-degree murder after police said they found a woman’s body late Friday.
Police said they received a call at 11:49 p.m. to check on the welfare of a resident on Wild Cherry Lane in Lenoir. Officers who arrived at the scene found Tammy Lynn Benge, 38.
An autopsy was conducted on Benge's body Monday morning, but the initial findings have not yet been released.
Authorities arrested 36-year-old Michael Joseph Whisnant, who lived at the residence. He is being held without bond in the Caldwell County Detention Center, and is set to make a first appearance in court on Monday.
Authorities are treating the case as a domestic-related homicide.
Whisenant has been placed on an electric monitoring device, and is restricted to his residence. Authorities say Whisenant was charged in 2011 with assault with a deadly weapon, and has now been ordered not to be around, or have contact with the victim in that case pending the outcome of this incident.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Lenoir police at 828-757-2100 or Lenoir/Caldwell County Crime Stoppers at 828-758-8300.
