HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue is looking for information on the deaths of two blue herons this week at a pond in Huntersville.

The male and female blue herons were nesting at a pond on Green Farm Road.  Someone shot both of the large birds and experts at the Rescue were unable to save either of the herons.

Their records show another blue heron was shot and killed at the exact same pond in April, 2012.

Blue herons are federally protected birds.  The fine for killing one can reach up to $250,000.  It is also illegal to discharge a weapon in a residential area and the pond is surrounded by homes and located in a neighborhood.

The Carolina Waterfowl Rescue believes the person shooting the herons is doing it on purpose.  They ask anyone with information to please contact authorities.
