STANLY COUNTY, N.C. – The Stanly County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a death just outside of the Albemarle city limit.
Investigators said they found a man's body in the basement of a home on Groves Avenue Sunday night. They said he was found duct-taped to a chair.
It was not immediately clear what led up to the discovery.
The State Bureau of Investigations is also assisting with the discovery and authorities have remained on the scene since the body was found.
Friends of the victim said the house belonged to the man's relatives.
Detectives told NBC Charlotte there are signs of foul play. Authorities said they did not see any apparent gunshot wounds on the victim but would not release further details on what may have caused the man's death.
Neighbors were nervous because deputies have not named a suspect.
State investigators spent a large part of Monday afternoon going through a silver car parked across the street from the home. The car did not belong to the victim, according to sources close to the situation.
Friends of the victim said his family is heartbroken. NBC Charlotte made several unsuccessful attempts to contact the victim's family Monday.
