CHESTER COUNTY, S.C. – The newly elected sheriff of Chester County is looking to prosecute the person he said poisoned his dog.

Sheriff Alex Underwood says the 19-month-old dog, A.J., died early Monday.

The county's first African-American sheriff says the dog was being trained to become a K-9 with the department.

Underwood thinks someone poisoned the dog during the weekend. He says he left the dog in the yard during Chester's Martin Luther King parade. He says shortly after he returned, the dog began acting oddly and died early Monday morning.

In a Facebook post, Sheriff Alex Underwood said “for those of you who have threatened me and my family, hide behind Facebook and have now taken action to poison our dog AJ.”

The sheriff goes on to write “this is a criminal act and you are low life and scum. Do what you have to do and say what you have to say, but be man enough to say it and do it to me."
