LENOIR, N.C. -- A community in North Carolina is fighting to save Frosty the snowman.
The 35-foot inflatable snowman has welcomed customers to the Mountain Top Fraser Fir tree stand for decades in Lenoir, but city leaders say it violates a new city ordinance that restricts signs.
City leaders told owner Larry Smith he has to get rid of Frosty, but Smith says he'd rather pay the $50 a day fine because the big snowman is such an institution in town.
Thousands of people have rallied around the family business and supporters have started a Facebook page to Save Frosty. Supporters have donated money to help Smith pay the fines.
A hearing is scheduled later this month to see if the planning board will grant Smith an exception. Until then they have suspended Smith’s daily fine.
