A local group is using their love of basketball to help others.

Every Saturday at the Gym near the Elon Elementary school a few dozen guys come out to sweat and have fun playing pickup basketball games. They have taken the love of the game to another level to help others who are less fortunate.

“If we can come back together to play ball we can come back to give to our community,” said Bo Hussey.

“It’s a great group of guys, we’ve developed awesome relationships both personal and now we’re giving back to the community and you can’t do better than that,” Hussey continued.

The South Charlotte Hoops group or “@SCLThoops” started small when few guys tweeted to see if anyone wanted to start playing tennis. Then a suggestion of basketball and that tweet lead to what today is a group of 40 guys who are part of this group.

They also use social media to help those in need. In October, they partnered with one agency to help raise money to refurbish the weight room at West Mecklenburg High School and now they have turned their attentions to helping two families for the holidays.

They are using Twitter and their Facebook page to ask for donations and help for their cause, a cause that has grown because of their love of sport and helping others.

“Social media is the driver of all this we stared in twitter and now between twitter and face book now this is how we gather this is how we help each other out and now this is how we help our community.” said Hussey.
