Fire officials said it took 27 firefighters to get the blaze under control. Several units were damaged during the fire.

The fire started on the patio of a second floor apartment, but how it started is still under investigation, according to officials.

The fire started on the upstairs’ patio of Ardrian Johnson apartment.  It was his 13-year-old daughter Ikashia Casey who alerted the family.

"She saved my life.  It was me, my cousin and my son. We were all in there asleep," said Johnson.

Johnson said he tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher, but it was far too gone.

"Man, it was just growing.  It was rolling across the patio. It was over after that," he said.

Ronniqua Lambert  lives below the Johnson's.  Ikashia alerted her as well.

"Another little girl knocked on my door and informed me that the building was on fire," Lambert said.

She took one look at that patio and had one thought, "get my loved ones, get my mother and get the hell out of dodge."

Several families are now homeless.  Yet, most know it could have been much worse.

"I'm going to wait for the Red Cross and be thankful that everybody got out OK," said Lambert.
