CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. -- A Long View mother accused of child abuse made her first appearance in a Catawba County Courtroom Friday afternoon.
Whitney Ann Weathers was arrested Thursday and was very emotional in front of the judge.
“I love my kids with all my heart and, I just want my baby back,” said Weathers.
Last Friday, her 18-month-old son died and her 3-year-old daughter was injured; court documents say the injuries were from burns.
Weather’s boyfriend 25-year-old William Howard Lail was home at the time and ran to get help, but police arrested him for murder shortly after they started their investigation.
Weathers mother and stepfather joined her in court and clearly believe she was not at fault.
"She's very shaken, she just wants her baby boy back, her daughter -- she loves them with all her heart she's a very good mom," said Gale Ervin, Weathers mother.
Investigators say she failed to report the abuse. Daniel Ervin, her stepfather, says Lail is to blame.
"I want the public to know that we back Whitney 100 percent; we know she’s innocent,” said Ervin.
“We've been around her long enough to know she would never hurt those kids, and if anything Bill was the one that controlled her, threatened her, and made her believe that she couldn’t go to anybody".
Weathers is charged with two counts of felony child abuse, her bond was set at $40,000. She was released from jail Friday morning.
