CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Mayor of Columbia, S.C. Steve Benjamin lost his brother-in-law Friday in a deadly Charlotte shooting, the mayor's office confirms.

Police say Donald Gist Jr. was shot around 1:15 p.m. in the 2100 block of Beatties Ford Road.

Witnesses tell NBC Charlotte they heard several gunshots. The owner of a nearby shop called 911 when he noticed the victim. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Donald Gist Jr. was the brother of Benjamin’s wife, who is a circuit court judge.

Benjamin's office issued the following statement:

"The shock and sadness of [the] past few hours have been difficult to bear. We will remember Donald as he was: a loving husband, father, son and brother. He is survived his wife, son sister and a host of loving relatives. We will continue to lean on our faith in Almighty God and each other as we try to make sense of this tragedy.

“We thank you all for the tremendous outpouring of support and we ask for your continued prayers in the days and weeks to come”

Detectives said Friday the victim and suspect did know each other. Suspect information has not yet been released.

West Charlotte High School was on lockdown Friday afternoon for about 30 minutes due to the investigation.
