CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte-Mecklenburg school bus was hit head on Friday afternoon on Monroe Road injuring a total of seven people.

It was just before 4:30 p.m. when the bus carrying four special needs students and two adults from Randolph Middle School was hit while traveling south in the left lane of Monroe Road, just past North Sharon Amity Road.

Louis Scalzo was behind the bus in his van. He jammed on his brakes and swerved onto the curb to avoid the bone-jarring collision.

"This white pickup truck swerved into the oncoming lane of the school bus doing about 50 or so," said Scalzo.

Scalzo said the kids and adults on the bus all got out through the back door.

"They all looked shook up but I didn't see any really bad injuries," Scalzo said.

Andy Williams with Medic said all the students were up and walking around when the first units arrived.

"Our crews are providing excellent care for them and like I said, they are potentially non-life-threatening injuries," Williams said.

Scalzo said the driver of the pickup had to be taken out through the rear of the cab.

All the injured were taken to either Carolinas Medical Center or Presbyterian Hospital.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating the accident and have not said if they know why the pickup's driver crossed the center line.

Scalzo just considers himself lucky.

"I was like, 'Oh my God, I think somebody upstairs was looking out for me today,'" he said.
