CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have arrested a man in connection with the fatal Sunday morning shooting in northwest Charlotte.

Derrick Akeem Byers, 21, was arrested and charged with murder Monday in the death of 20-year-old Thomas Brown.

The shooting occurred in the 4000 Block of Tennessee Avenue around 7:36 a.m. Sunday. 

Neighbors told NBC Charlotte, the man was shot while sitting in his car. According to neighbors, the man got out and ran to a home and knocked on the front door pleading for help.

According to authorities, when they arrived they located Brown, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
 
Brown was in surgery at Carolinas Medical Center Sunday afternoon.  He was later pronounced dead as a result of the shooting, police said.
