New Publix Store
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- You could call it the supermarket shuffle.
Publix is buying up more grocery stores in the Charlotte area and so is Harris Teeter, which is being bought by another grocery store chain.
The battlefield for the grocery store wars is changing -- again.
A few months ago we told you Matthews based Harris teeter was being bought out. Giant chain Kroger is taking over.
And this week, word of several more shakeups.
Publix is buying seven Charlotte area Bi-Lo's. While Publix is buying some of the Bi-Lo stores, Bi-Lo has plans to buy 22 Piggly Wiggly stores in South Carolina and Georgia.
Harris Teeter is also buying some Piggly Wiggly's.
The Publix deal means the Florida based chain is making a big move in what has long been Harris Teeter territory.
Meaning the fight for customers will only get tougher.
Shoppers we talked to say no matter what name is on the building, it still all comes down to two things -- location and pricing.
All of the deals are still being worked out, but the Publix buyout will be finalized by Oct. 19. That will be the final business day for the seven stores. The Bi-Lo stores will then be remodeled.
The reopening dates have not been announced.
