CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Davan Bynum and Resean Lindsay just became two of the youngest rape suspects ever arrested by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
The two friends just turned 16 in January.
"I think this was a crime of opportunity. I don’t think there was a real plan in place for anything," said Captain Michelle Hummel, who heads CMPD’S Sexual Assault Unit.
Police say that Sunday night, a 23-year-old woman was walking home after visiting one of the bars near The Plaza, as she got to Briar Creek Road she encountered the two teens.
"They engaged her in conversation and shortly after that, they accosted her and sexually assaulted her," said the captain.
Investigators say that Bynum and Lindsay kidnapped the victim and held her against her will for a couple of hours. They say this was a stranger rape, which poses the most danger to the community.
"Both of our suspects turned 16 in January, so we can't elaborate on their juvenile records, but there is nothing sexual related in their records," said Hummel.
Police say Bynum attends Myers Park High School; Lindsay is a student at West Mecklenburg High.
"He was quiet. He would walk around and he had friends he talked to. He never really got in trouble," said Marlon Lomax, a classmate of Lindsay’s.
The two teens are facing multiple rape and robbery charges. The maximum for first-degree rape is 30 years and that’s just for one count.
