CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A pregnant woman and her unborn child were murdered in the middle of the night by someone who shot into a living room window at an apartment complex in southwest Charlotte early Wednesday morning.

Police are still trying to figure out who did it and why the 19-year-old was shot to death at the Little Rock Apartments on Leake Street.

A resident of the apartment where Ondrea Japonica Stevenson was shot and killed says twice this week and prior to the shooting, some guys showed up at their door looking for the pregnant woman's boyfriend. She thinks that boyfriend might have been the target, but he didn't live there.

Instead, she says the 19-year-old woman, three-months pregnant with her first child, was shot several times, including in the chest and leg, as she slept on the living room sofa, and the shooters may have thought the boyfriend was sleeping in the apartment with her.

Stevenson was transported to Carolinas Medical Center where she later died from her injuries, according to police.

You can see several bullet holes in the apartment window.

A witness says three men ran up to the window around 2 a.m., fired multiple shots, then ran away and took off in a car.

Right now, police aren't saying if they have any suspects.

No one has been arrested.

The big question is why.

Neighbors say as tragic as this is, it could have been worse because four children who also live in the apartment typically sleep on a mattress in that living room, but didn't Tuesday night.

"Normally they would be camped out there, laying on a mattress in there. But this night nobody was in the living room but her. They could have got anybody," said friend DeeDee Craig. “She [Stevenson] was so excited about being pregnant with her first child-- so excited."

A witness who rents that apartment say they recently let Stevenson live with them because she was pregnant and homeless after having a fallout with relatives.

But her boyfriend wasn't allowed to stay there, but came by often.

The family says due to the shooting, they are being evicted from the Little Rock Apartments.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a Homicide Unit Detective.
