NEAR CLAREMONT, N.C. -- A woman was shot and killed by a Catawba County sheriff's deputy outside of a home in Catawba County Monday afternoon.
The shooting happened at a home off of James Street near Highway 70 just east of Claremont around 12:30 p.m.
Authorities said they received a call of a woman holding a gun and threatening to hurt herself at the home.
When deputies arrived on scene, the woman pointed the weapon at the deputies. According to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, five officers responded to the scene. One of the officers fired his gun and shot and killed the woman.
The officer has been with the sheriff's office since 1999. His status is to be determined pending the outcome of the investigation.
The woman did not live at the home where the shooting occurred, according to the sheriff's office.
