Movie theaters across the Carolinas packed for Black Panther

It is breaking records and breaking down barriers. Marvel's 'Black Panther' made it's highly anticipated debut across the Carolinas, may showings sold out well in advance of opening night.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It is breaking records and breaking down barriers. Marvel's 'Black Panther' made it's highly anticipated debut across the Carolinas, may showings sold out well in advance of opening night.

Hundreds descending upon movie theaters across the Carolinas selling out shows to see Marvel Studios latest movie sensation.

"To see Black Panther yeah, we are super excited about it," said Ian McCabe.

Black Panther tells the story of a black superhero, who reigns king of an African nation.

"I haven’t been this excited about a movie in a long time," said Yeanna Smith.

Because of its nearly all black cast and Marvel’s first black director, Black Panther for many, is much more than just a movie.

"This is so monumental and historical," said movie goer Shayna Duncan.

Opening night brought in more than 25 million dollars, the second biggest Thursday night open for a Marvel Studios film, behind Avengers: Age of the Ultron in 2015.

Carolinians from all different walks of life are anxious to be taken to a new world, to see something rarely seen on the big screen.

"She’s excited to see female empowerment of the sisters and stuff. And I’m excited to see people of color with an awesome movie and awesome franchise," said McCabe.

The City of Charlotte debuted a new logo just for the occasion.

As well as the Carolina Panthers, who also asked artists to create unique pieces of work inspired by the film.

Disney projects ‘Black Panther’ will rake in more than 170 million dollars this President’s Day weekend.
