Are community pools safe for children?

With Memorial Day on the horizon, signaling the start of summer, Mecklenburg County outdoor pools are set to open soon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- With Memorial Day on the horizon, signaling the start of summer, Mecklenburg County outdoor pools are set to open soon.

But now there is concern amongst parents: Are the pools safe for their kids to swim in?

“Our kids swim in these pools so if they were unsafe we wouldn't be here and we wouldn't allow it,” said Rodney Sellers.

Sellers is a pool supervisor for the county and says he's aware of the dangers dirty pool water can pose.

“There's a lot of facilities throughout the county. The Mecklenburg County pools all go through the same scrutiny,” said Sellers.

The Centers for Disease Control is encouraging parents to check public pool inspections before allowing the little ones to dip into the water.

County officials say it's not the large public pools that you really need to worry about. It's the smaller neighborhood pools that could pose a problem.

“Some of the smaller pools that don't need these guidelines is where you might run into your public risk,” said one official.

The CDC says thousands of pools across the country are closed due to improper pH levels, safety equipment issues and problems with disinfectant concentration. If not treated properly, the water could be loaded with harmful pathogens thanks to sweat, urine and other bodily fluids.

So how did some of the pools in our area do on the latest inspection? NBC Charlotte checked and most did well.

Cordelia Park: Loose ladder in the deep end of the pool
Cordelia Park Sprayground: Water Quality (told to maintain correct chemical levels including Chlorine, corrected)
Double Oaks: No violations
