Officials confirm case of Zika in York County

According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, this is the 17th case reported in South Carolina this year.

YORK COUNTY, S.C. – Officials in York County confirmed a case of travel-related Zika virus Saturday.

According to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, this is the 17th case reported in South Carolina this year.

County officials said in a release Saturday that they are working with the SCDHEC to ensure the safety of York County residents and will continue to monitor for Zika and other mosquito-borne diseases, such as West Nile, which was also found in York County earlier this year.

With stormy weather in the Charlotte area, mosquito expert Brandon Johnson said homeowners should check for standing water around their homes.

"If it's just an inch of standing water, within 24 hours, you can have larvae warms from mosquitoes," Johnson said. "Dump it over completely, and that right there can save you from getting mosquitoes."

The most common symptoms of Zika are the following:

  • Fever
  • Rash
  • Joint pain
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Muscle pain
  • Headache
