Sen. Tillis: 'Deeply disturbing' if campaign misled

Sen. Thom Tillis said it would be "deeply disturbing" if Cambridge Analytica misled his 2014 campaign. Cambridge Analytica is the company that is accused of stealing private information from 50 million Facebook users.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Republican Sen. Thom Tillis said it would be “deeply disturbing” if Cambridge Analytica misled his 2014 campaign.

Cambridge Analytica is the company that is accused of stealing private information from 50 million Facebook users.

The Tillis campaign paid the company $30,000 during the 2014 election where Tillis narrowly defeated Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan.

Tillis, who refused to answer any questions on the subject Monday, released a statement Tuesday saying Cambridge Analytica provided only limited services during the campaign.

However, on its webpage, the company boasts of how “telecanvassing” resulted in a turnout increase of some 16,000 voters.

Facebook has since banned the company from its site.

In his statement, Tillis said, “My experience is that all services provided to my campaign are lawful…If we were misled by a vendor, that would be deeply disturbing.”

Wayne Goodwin, who is the Chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Party, said of the involvement of Cambridge Analytica, “I don’t know if it had any direct impact but it certainly was a trial run for what happened in 2016 here in elections across our country.”

State GOP Chair Dallas Woodhouse countered saying, “This is a classic example of the media and the Democrats working hand in hand to ding Republicans, facts and fairness be damned.”
