Here’s an interesting stat regarding Panthers wide receiver Devin Funchess, who is now effectively the top receiver in Carolina after the team traded Kelvin Benjamin to the Buffalo Bills.
In the Panthers’ five wins this season, Funchess has totaled 22 catches for 222 yards and three touchdowns. In the three losses, he has 11 catches for 135 yards and zero touchdowns.
It is interesting to see he has twice as many catches in wins as he does losses, and it’s always fun to look at numbers at face value. But let’s dig a bit into this.
Funchess only had two catches for 20 yards in the season-opening win against the 49ers and two catches for just 11 yards last week against the Buccaneers. His third-highest yardage total came in the Week 3 loss against the Saints when he had a 4/58/0 line.
He was a key factor in the upset victory over the Patriots, however, catching seven passes for 70 yards (his highest single-game total this season) and two touchdowns.
Of course, Funchess getting the ball more may be a function of the offense running better in general, but it’s telling that when he does well, the team does well. It will be interesting to see if that trend continues on Sunday against the Falcons.
