WADESBORO, N.C. -- A head-on collision claimed the life of a 13-month-old girl and left the child's mother in critical condition.

Around 4 p.m. on U.S. 74, Wadesboro Police say a westbound Volkswagen Jetta collided with a Dodge Intrepid. Authorities say the Jetta crossed the median into oncoming traffic.

The Jetta's four occupants, the 13-month-old, Alexis Hooper, her mother, Kelsey Hooper, and father, Alex Hooper, and the child's uncle, were all taken to the hospital. Alexis was pronounced deceased upon arrival, Kelsey is listed in critical condition, while the child's uncle and father are both listed as fair. The nature of their injuries has not been released.

On Friday, the child's uncle, Caleb, was upgraded to "good".

One of the two occupants of the Intrepid was treated for their injuries and released; the other remains hospitalized at CMC in stable condition.

Although alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, police say charges are pending.

The Associated Press reports that Alexis died of head injuries she sustained in the crash.

According to the "Prayer Chain for the Hooper family" Facebook page, a vigil is  planned for Monday, December 30 at 6 p.m. at the Dallas Courthouse.

Friday morning, a post on the Facebook page by a woman who stated she was Kelsey's mother provided an update on her condition, saying "Kelsey has been taken back for her second surgery. She is doing good and they are going to try to take her off the ventilator also."

Editor's Note: In an earlier version of this story, it was reported that both occupants of the Dodge Intrepid had been released from the hospital. Friday afternoon, Wadesboro Police corrected that information. One occupant was released, while the other, Saundra Davis, remains hospitalized at CMC in stable condition.
