CHARLOTTE, N.C. – All eastbound lanes of Wilkinson Boulevard will close at noon Wednesday after the street’s pavement collapsed.
Officials first shut down two of the three lanes Tuesday. A washout led to the lane closures between Old Dowd Road and Sam Wilson Road.
Authorities say recent heavy rains formed the washout underneath the roadway, leaving a utility pipe exposed and a significant void underneath the pavement.
Crews closed the third lane to determine the official cause and extent of damage.
Detour signs will guide motorists from Wilkinson Boulevard to Old Dowd Road, down Sam Wilson Road, then back to Wilkinson.
The eastbound lanes are expected to fully reopen by Monday morning.
