NEWTON, N.C. -- Three people were killed Wednesday after a car apparently ran a flashing red light and was T-boned by a tractor-trailer.

Police say a 12-year-old boy is among the victims.

According to the state Highway Patrol, the boy was inside a Suzuki that ran a flashing light at the intersection of Highway 16 and Highway 10 near Newton. Troopers say the light was flashing because of a power outage in the area.

The adult victims were identified as 56-year-old Joyce White and 66-year-old Ruby Leatherman.

Troopers say two other boys in the car -- a 10-year-old and 11-year-old -- were taken to Carolinas Medical Center in critical condition.

The CMPD Significant Event web page at http://maps.cmpdweb.org/significanteventlog/ usually has more detailed information than you will find at this site.
