ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. (AP) -- Four members of a South Carolina family were killed and a 90-year-old woman critically injured when their car crashed along Interstate 95 in North Carolina.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol told multiple media outlets that Annie Mae Brown was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and was in critical condition following Saturday's crash.
Investigators are unsure how 30-year-old driver Sylvester Pernell lost control of the 2004 Saturn Vue. The SUV ran off the road into a wooded median, hit two pine trees and flipped over.
In addition to the driver, three passengers died. They were 28-year-old Jamal Pernell, 21-year-old Kimberley Pernell and 55-year-old Georgia Pernell. All of them were from Dillon, S.C., near the North Carolina-South Carolina state line.
