CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Authorities identified the victim in a fatal wreck on Interstate 85 Saturday afternoon that snarled traffic four hours.
Aquilla Hill, a Kentucky resident with family in Charlotte, died when she drove her Honda underneath a cement truck on the Mallard Creek Church Road exit, troopers said. She was in her 20s.
Trooper R.A. Benge estimated that Hill’s car was going about 60 mph when it crashed into the truck at 2:14 p.m. Crews closed the two right northbound lanes and an exit ramp for more than two hours.
The lanes have since reopened but drivers are now running into another problem: congestion from people heading to Concord Mills, which is at exit 49.
Drivers can take the following detours to avoid the congestion:
• To get to Mallard Creek Church Road: Take exit 45A east to North Tryon Street and re-access Mallard Creek Church Road that way.
• To continue north on I-85: Take US 29/NC 49 Connector to Tryon St to I-485 NB (Outer Loop) back to northbound I-85. APRIL BETHEA CONTRIBUTED
