GASTONIA, N.C. -- More than a hundred people crowded a Gastonia bar and restaurant Sunday afternoon, for a benefit supporting the parents of a toddler killed in a car accident Christmas Day.

Alexis Hooper, known as "Lexi" to her family, was just 13-months-old when her father's car veered into oncoming traffic on Highway 74 in Wadesboro.

Her parents, Alex and Kelsey Hooper, were seriously injured in the crash, and each spent several days in the hospital.  Kelsey Hooper requires continuing care, with more surgeries scheduled.

Sunday, friends and supporters crowded Rock House Bar and Billiards in Gastonia for a fundraiser offering bands, BBQ plates, and desserts for donations.  All of the money goes directly to help the family pay bills, including medical bills, said organizer Heather Harris.

Neither of Lexi's parents can work while they recover, and they are also suffering from grief of losing their young daughter, said Harris.

"They're just trying to surround themselves with as much positivity as possible," said Harris.  "Surround themselves with family and friends, and just trying to laugh and enjoy life as best as they can."

The fundraiser is scheduled to continue until 11 p.m. Sunday.
