HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – The keys to Birkdale Golf Course were returned to their owners Wednesday afternoon, about a day after the North Carolina Department of Revenue ordered its closure.

The Huntersville club, in the 16500 block of Birkdale Commons Parkway, closed Tuesday. Signs reading "no trespassing" were posted on the doors shortly after authorities arrived on scene. The Department of Revenue says it issued a civil warrant because of pertinent taxes owed to the state.

In total, the club owed more than $200,000 to federal, state and local agencies. The money was repaid by Wednesday afternoon.

The general manager most recently told NBC Charlotte the club should reopen on Thursday.

The Department of Labor says it’s also investigating the club after employees filed several reports of late payments.

Several additional lawsuits from vendors and others have also been filed in the past. The alleged victims say they’re own hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Huntersville Police Department told NBC Charlotte it assisted the Department of Revenue enter the golf club, but it does not have an active role in the investigation.
