ROCK HILL, S.C. -- The extreme cold is especially tough on kids who have to walk to the bus stop.  The goal this weekend was to collect 5,000 coats for local kids so they’ll have new or gently used coats to keep them warm.

The campaign effort is called "Coats For Kids" and it’s sponsored by Chick-Fil-A.  The public can help the campaign reach their goal by dropping off a new or gently used coat at Chick-Fil-A locations on Dave Lyle Boulevard, Lancaster, Baxter Village or Cherry Road.

"We had no idea the need was as great as it is.  So to be able to participate in any way to get a coat on a child's back that’s without one is a great thing," said Laurie Harris of Chick-Fil-A.

That coat drive runs through Sunday.  Organizers tell NewsChannel 36 they'll accept donations throughout the winter.
