ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- Two West Rowan High School students were killed driving home after their first day back in class after summer vacation Monday afternoon.

Police have identified the victims as 16-year-old Cody Rives and 15-year-old Terry Johnson, both sophomores.

Investigators said the red Mazda Miata that Rives was driving hit the side of the Second Creek Bridge, crossed the center line and hit an oncoming Chevy Trailblazer.

The driver of the Trailblazer was not seriously hurt.

At the high school Tuesday night, students gathered to paint the rock outside in memory of their friends.

"We really need to be more careful about all the stuff we do because we always think we're invincible as teenagers but we really need to consider our time," said Cele Weakfall, a senior.

Red paint from the car the boys were in could still be seen on the side of the bridge.

"It is just so sad for those two families that are having to deal with this. I could never imagine that," said Sara Holmes, the president of the student body at the school.

School officials plan to have councilors on hand tomorrow for any student that needs to talk.
