SHELBY, N.C. -- A company that came to Shelby promising hundreds of jobs is trying to figure out what caused a deadly accident on their property.
Around 9:45 Friday morning, Shelby Police and Cleveland County EMS responded to an incident in the 600 block of Plato Lee Road.
Cleveland County EMS tells NBC Charlotte a private contractor died in an accident at a KSM construction site.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a 10-inch pipe struck the private contractor in the head when the cap was removed from the concrete casting.
The victim's identity has not yet been released, but authorities say the victim worked for United Mechanical Corporation.
The company is an auto parts production facility and the new building is still under construction.
There was a lot of fanfare early in 2013 when the governor announced the plant would be coming to Shelby and brining 200 jobs. They are supposed to open later this year.
An OSHA investigation has been intitiated; OSHA arrived on scene at KSM Castings in Shelby at about two on Friday afternoon, several hours after the accident.
The Department of Labor is talking to witnesses, taking photographs and checking the company's history. OSHA workplace investigations typically take three to four months, officials say.
Editor's Note: In an earlier version of this story, authorities told NBC Charlotte the incident occurred at PPG Industries in the 900 block of Washburn Switch Road; this information has since been updated and corrected.
