CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A deadly accident involving a missing elderly woman briefly shutdown all lanes of Interstate 85 south early Wednesday morning.
The accident happened around 1 a.m. between Glenwood Drive and Freedom Drive. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the victim is 76-year-old Shirley Pharr.
Pharr suffered from early stages of dementia and was reported missing Tuesday evening by her family. Pharr was last seen around 4 p.m. leaving her home at 3319 Dawnshire Avenue.
Police said Pharr was walking down I-85 when she was struck by two tractor-trailers.
A driver saw Pharr walking down the interstate near Freedom Drive and turned around. By the time the driver was able to turn around Pharr had already been hit, according to police.
Authorities are still investigating how Pharr got on to I-85, and where she was before she was killed.
Police reopened all lanes I-85 around 6 a.m.
