Duke Energy 'equipment failure' leaves thousands with no power

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. -- Monday thousands were left in the dark after a Duke Energy equipment failure, officials said.

According to the company's outage website 5,403 Mecklenburg County customers were without power around 6:00 p.m.

A spokeswoman for the company, said the outages were caused by "equipment failure", and that crews were working to restore power.

The Siskey YMCA posted to it's Facebook page, "The only areas with power are the fitness center and family locker rooms. Everything is cancelled and closed including child watch and group exercise."

Followers of @WCNC reported outages.

@Sfinn06 said, "...power outages due to what? All is well in South Park area."

Around 8:22 p.m. the amount of outages had dropped significantly to 1,002 in Mecklenburg County.

"The power could be out for quite some time," officials said.
