LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. -- A visitation was held Thursday night for Lancaster 5-year-old Soren Chilson and her funeral will be held Friday. Her mother's boyfriend, Phillip Gleason, is charged in her death.
It’s a shocking case that has the Lancaster community outraged.
Neighbors on Craig Farm Road are outraged after hearing of the death of 5-year-old Soren Victoria Chilson.
Soren's mom, April Victoria Snipes, was at work when her boyfriend of six months, Phillip Gleason, called 911. Gleason is now charged in Soren's death.
"They ought to take him out there and burn him a little bit, hurting a child like that," said one neighbor.
Lancaster County Sheriff's office says the girl died from blunt force trauma to the head. NBC Charlotte learned that when EMS responded to Gleason's 911 call to the home, Soren was soaking wet in the bathroom. Gleason told police she was throwing up so he splashed water on her.
"From my understanding when EMS got there she was unresponsive. The cause of that, I just don't know. We're waiting on other tests to come back from pathology," said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile.
But the sheriff's department confirmed to NBC Charlotte the girl suffered cuts and bruises on her head and arm.
In Gleason's mug shot you can see several small scratches on his face.
Gleason had been living with Soren and her mother for about three months.
Winthrop University confirms he was enrolled as a student, however, he's now suspended and not allowed on campus.
According to our partners at the Charlotte Observer Gleason is a Purple Heart recipient after suffering injuries while serving in Iraq.
Other than a few traffic tickets in York County, Gleason had no previous criminal record.
Now family and friends will remember little Soren at the Lancaster Funeral Home while Gleason sits in jail denied bond.
Family will hold the funeral for Soren Friday at Antioch Baptist Church in Lancaster.
