KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Officials shut down I-85 southbound on Saturday after a body was found on the roadway.
Both lanes of I-85 southbound were closed near mile marker 63 and Lane Street for four hours.
Now, authorities say they're 99-percent sure they've identified the body, but have not released a name.
According to the investigating trooper Sgt. Barger, the body is that of a white male.
Authorities say although the gruesome discovery was made around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday they believe the body had been on the side of I-85 since Friday night.
Officials said it's not clear if the deceased jumped from the nearby bridge or if they were pushed.
"At this point, we need help. We're asking anyone who saw anything to give us a call," said Sgt. Barger, "we can tell the person was struck by a vehicle," he said.
Authorities are searching the area looking for any disabled vehicles that may be linked to the person who was found.
According to investigators, the victim didn't have any identification and first responders could only make out that they have red hair.
Several eyewitnesses contacted the NBC Charlotte newsroom after seeing what they described as a decapitated body lying in the roadway.
Highway Patrol dispatchers said they didn’t receive any initial calls for a vehicle crash. Anyone with information should call Cabarrus County Crime Stoppers at 704-932-7463.
