GASTONIA, N.C.-- Donnika Lashea Wallace, 16, was caught up in gunfire Thursday evening after an altercation on W. Airline Avenue in Gastonia.

The Hunter Huss High School student was apparently walking with a group of people, including her boyfriend, when they met another group along the train tracks. Police say there was an altercation between two men and one pulled a handgun and began shooting.

Sgt. Jimmy Arndt said Wallace was not the intended target. She was the only person hit and succumbed to her injuries just yards from the spot where she was shot.

Gastonia police arrested Rodney Derone Mario Davis and charged him with homicide.

Wallace was a student at Hunter Huss High School. She is survived by a brother and sister, and her mother Martha.
