KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The  Kannapolis Fire Department responded Monday afternoon to a large fire at an apartment complex.

The fire happened at the Royal Oaks Garden Apartments off Concord Lake Road around 4:15.

Heavy fire and smoke billowed from the four involved units when fire crews arrived on the scene.

Firefighters quickly entered the structure searching for victims. Command called a "Code Red", advising fire crews to immediately exit the structure as the flames grew in intensity, making the structure unsafe.

Before first responders arrived, several residents in a corner unit became trapped and were forced to jump from a second-story window. Officials say they received minor injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

The apartments involved suffered serious damage, officials say, and The American Red Cross, Cabarrus County was called in to assist the victims.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
