High speed chase leads to double fatal in Caldwell County

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. –- A high speed chase that started in Blowing Rock ended with two people dead along US 321 in Caldwell County.

According to the Highway Patrol the chase started around 11:30 on 321 Sunday morning when a Blowing Rock Police officer noticed a motorcycle weaving in and out of traffic.

The chase ended and picked up again near the WalMart on 321 this time with a sheriff’s deputy chasing the motorcycle from Lenoir and into the Hudson city limits.

According to the investigating trooper, speeds reached an estimated 120 miles per hour.  Law enforcement tells NewsChannel 36, the on again – off again chase covered approximately 25 miles in roughly 15 minutes.

Highway Patrol says the chase came to a crashing halt after hitting a vehicle at a stop sign at the intersection of Glenn Ridge Drive and US 321.

John Franklin, 35, from Claremont and Allison Nixon, 22, from Conover were pronounced dead on the scene.

Investigators say at the time of the crash the motorcycle was not being chased by law enforcement officers.
