SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – The man accused of kidnapping his niece and running off to Georgia was transferred back to Charlotte to face charges Monday.

According to authorities, Cristino Leon, 39, was arrested in Spartanburg County after a traffic stop by the South Carolina Highway Patrol Sunday evening.

The incident began at the family’s apartment on Monroe Road on Saturday morning.

The girl’s mother told police that when she returned home from work she found her sister, Clementina Leon, tied with duct tape and her 12-year-old daughter missing.

Clementina Leon said her brother, Cristino Leon, had tied her up and threatened to take her. Instead, he made off with his 12-year-old niece.

Reportedly, the child was able to escape in Georgia when they stopped to get food.  The girl ran to the aid of a stranger for help.  That stranger called police, which eventually led to Cristino’s arrest.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police,  Leon is in their custody after being transferred back to Charlotte early Monday morning to face charges.
