RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- The co-founder of an organization that supports the survivors of murdered children is hoping to organize a nationwide vigil to honor the victims of the shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

Judy Williams said Saturday that Charlotte-based Mothers of Murdered Offspring is calling for a Nationwide Evening of Mourning next Tuesday. Williams wants every city and town to gather at a central location and light white candles to remember the 20 children and eight adults shot to death at Sandy Hook Elementary on Friday.

Williams said people have to do something to reassure children that they're going to be alright. She said she hopes the vigil sends a strong message of togetherness.

Williams said there will be a vigil in Charlotte regardless of whether vigils are held elsewhere.
