GASTONIA, N.C. -- A 76-year-old Gastonia man has been charged with shooting at a neighbor during an argument over a dog.

"You know, so much goes through your mind when you are staring down the barrel of a gun," said the 29-year-old woman who was fired at.

She asked not to be identified because she is still living just a few houses away from Howard Gibbie, who was booked into the Gaston County Jail after the incident on Monday.

She said it started when her Labrador puppy strayed onto his front lawn.

"He comes out and he is like, "(Racial epithet) you better get your dog out of my yard.'"

She said she immediately called her dog and started to leave.

"We take steps to come on up the sidewalk and he shoots at me.  I'm looking down the barrel of a gun," she said.

Her aunt, Lyndon Young, heard the shot and came outside.

"I thought she was hit.  She wasn't and he is still saying the 'N'-word," said Young.

The young woman had not been hit by the shotgun blast that went wide.  Investigators found pellets had hit a house across the street.

No one answered the door at Gibbie's house Wednesday night, where there was a car in the driveway and the shades and blinds were closed.

A neighbor, who did not want his name made public, said Gibbie was argumentative but had never before pulled out a gun of any kind.

The victim said she has had run-ins with Gibbie before and that she doesn't think it was her dog that was the real cause of what happened.

"The color of my skin.  Those days are gone.  I am just trying to live like him," she said.

Her aunt added, "The gun laws really have to change because it's really not right.  It is just not right and he could have killed any number of the kids that were in the yard."

Bond for Gibbie was set at $10,000.
