INDIAN TRAIL, N.C -- Union County investigators are looking for a small, black car and the gunman who was in it, after a 27-year-old man who was like a “big brother” to kids is Indian Trail neighborhood was shot to death in his front yard.
Christopher Reid Brown died Saturday night while hanging out with friends at his family’s home on West Street. Detectives said a small, black car pulled up outside the house around midnight, and when Brown approached it, he was shot several times. The car drove off.
Neighbors rushed to help, but Brown died.
"It's sad, it's really sad,” said neighbor Chad Miller, shaking his head. "He was very active -- always riding bikes, riding a skateboard, riding a scooter, always had friends over, always outside."
Investigators said they don’t believe the shooting was random, but Miller can’t understand who would hurt a young man who was such a great friend to neighborhood children.
“He was fantastic with our kids,” said Miller. "I've got an 8-year-old boy and he taught him how to ride a skateboard, different tricks and things like that, was really patient with him while Noah asked him questions about things he did."
Investigators hope finding the car the gunman was in will lead them to the suspect. They describe the car as small and black, with black rims and a distinctive “bumblebee” muffler.
Miller and his neighbors are keeping watch for the car, but also trying to figure out how to explain to their children that their “buddy” won’t be coming out to play.
“I haven't figured that out yet, to be completely honest,” said Miller. “He's asked, and my answers to this point are, ‘I don't know, you just need to pray for his mom. When you see her, just smile -- that's all you can do.'”
Anyone who sees the car or can help detectives solve this murder are asked to call Union County Crime Stoppers at 704-283-5600.
