CHINA GROVE, N.C. -- Police caught a murder suspect in the woods between Stanly and Montgomery counties after an overnight search.
China Grove police received a call to do a welfare check just before 8 p.m. Saturday on Roxanne Fowler Maddry, 48. Maddry had been reported missing to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers responded to a house in the 100 block of Poplar Street and found the victim’s vehicle outside of a home there. They say they also found additional evidence suggesting Maddry was inside the house and could be injured. Police entered to find Maddry dead.
Investigators immediately began looking for Wayne Eugene Hill, 56, who lives at the house. His car was spotted around 10 p.m. near the Stanly and Montgomery county line. Officers from both counties began assisting with the search.
Hill was found 8 a.m. Sunday in a wooded area near where his vehicle was seen. He was treated for injuries at Stanly Memorial Hospital under being transported back to China Grove.
He's currently being held at the Rowan County Detention Center without bond. His courtdate is set for June 11, 2013.
