BURKE COUNTY, N.C. -- Burke County Investigators and the SBI are trying to figure out what caused an early morning house fire in Connelly Springs that killed two kids.

Fire officials said a 6-year-old and 11-year-old died in a house fire on Old Laurel Road in Connelly Springs around 3 a.m.

A North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper was nearby the scene on a different call when he saw the smoke and drove to the home.

According to his supervisor, when the trooper arrived, a relative was on the lawn and and said the kids were inside.

That trooper broke a window to try and rescue the pair, but the smoke was too thick and he was forced to retreat.  The trooper was treated and released for smoke inhalation.

According to captain Richard Patton of George Hildebrand Fire and Rescue, when crews arrived the home was fully engulfed with "fire coming out of all windows."

Patton said there were 10 people inside the home at the time of the fire, some of them were taken to the hospital.

The kid's grandfather, Charlie Suderno, was notified by deputies early Thursday. He told NBC Charlotte he hoped the kids didn't suffer. He also said he had fond memories.

"The boy that was in there, he was me and my wife's weekend warrior. He'd come over and spend time with us," he said.

Suderno had some advice for parents and grandparents.

"All can say is besides the prayers, give your kids a hug tonight when they come home. They might not be here tomorrow."
