CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- He may be on the way out, but Charlotte's mayor is as popular as ever. A new poll released on Wednesday shows Pat McCrory's approval ratings are up.

The poll by Public Policy Polling in Raleigh shows, overall, McCrory has a 59 percent approval rating in Charlotte.

About four out of 10 Democrats also think Charlotte's Republican mayor is doing a good job. That's more support than Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue has among members of her own party statewide.

But the poll also shows that McCrory doesn't have a groundswell of support for challenging Perdue. According to the poll, only about half of Charlotteans want him to run for governor in 2012.

Of the Independents polled, only 46 percent want to see him run, and only 27 percent of Democrats feel that way.

If he had so many supporters then why didn't they make it to the polls?
