ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. -- Search teams discovered the body of Steven Tanksley around 9:15 Saturday night in the Yadkin River after searching for hours.

Officials say the 44-year-old man from Salisbury was trying to rescue a man who fell off a dam by the Cooleemee River Park on the Rowan-Davie County line earlier in the day.

Witnesses say that man was carrying a dog when he slipped and fell.  Dozens of people saw it happen and several, including Tanksley, swam over to help.  That man broke his ankle, but he and his dog are going to be ok.

Officials say the river was running high and fast, which contributed to the man falling from the dam and the dangerous swimming conditions.
